ZOJA BUZALKOVSKA

Zoja Buzalkovska (Skopje, 1971) graduated with a degree journalism from the University of Skopje Faculty of Law, in 1997, and theater directing from the University of Skopje Faculty of Dramatic Arts, in 1998. She holds a Master’s degree in culturology and a Master’s degree in theater directing.

She has worked at the University of Skopje Faculty of Dramatic Arts since 2000, where she is a professor of Acting and Theater Directing. She is the Head of the Chair of Theater Directing.

Some of her most significant productions are: The Curious Incident with the Dog in the Night-Time (2021), Festen based on the namesake film by David Eldridge (2018), The Gorge (2014), The Lover (1998), and Oedipus Tyrannus Sophoclis (1997) – Drama Theater Skopje; Uncle Vanya (2015) and Sand Jigsaw (1999) – Macedonian National Theater Skopje; Arabian Night (2019), Caligula (2011), and Where I Was Not (2009) – National Theater Prilep; Forget Herostratus! (2008) – Jordan Hadži Konstantinov-Džinot Theater Veles; Quartet (2016) – Kontrapunkt and MNT Skoplje; Spinoza (2010) – Small Drama Theater Bitola, Drama Theater and MNT; The Bridge (2008) and Boy with a Suitcase (2008) – DTC Skopje. U Elena Kamburova’s The Moscow Theater of Music and Poetry she directed the production of Happy Roads/Bahktale Dromensa (2006), based on Alexander Pushkin’s The Gypsies, which was resumed in early 2020. She has received several national and international awards.

She has taken part in numerous festivals and workshops, as a teacher and director: OLIVE meetings of drama academies (Corte, Tel Aviv, Sofia, Bucharest); the Dionisius Festival, Djakovo; Regional Network of Theater Academies, Zagreb; Dostoevsky and Wajda seminar, Saint Petersburg; Theater Exchange, Prague; Slavic Bazaar 101, NET Festival, Moscow; New Technologies and Theater, BELEF, Belgrade. She has taken part in symposia locally and abroad: The Actor is Dead, Long Live the Actor (2012) and The Experience of Theater Laboratories in the 20th Century and Their Influence on Contemporary Theater Practice (2014), Sterijino Pozorje, Novi Sad. She has written several papers in the field of directing and acting, coauthored and redacted several monographs. She is author of the book Conversations with UNKOvski (2018)
